How to clone a Shopify theme

Duplicating your own theme takes a minute. Copying it to another store takes a little more. Recreating another store's design is a different job. This guide covers all three.

1. Duplicate a theme in your own store

Use this before making changes, so you can edit a copy without touching the live store.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
  2. Next to the theme, open the ⋯ menu and choose Duplicate.
  3. The copy appears in your theme library, unpublished. Rename it so you know what it's for.

Edit the copy, preview it, and publish it when ready. Your current theme stays in the library as a fallback.

2. Copy your theme to another store

  1. In the original store, go to Online Store → Themes, open the theme's ⋯ menu and choose Download theme file. Shopify emails you a link to the ZIP.
  2. In the other store, go to Online Store → Themes → Add theme → Upload zip file.
  3. Re-create what isn't in the theme: products, collections, pages, menus, apps and their settings. Navigation menus and app blocks often need attention.
Check the licence. Themes bought from the Shopify Theme Store are generally licensed for one store. Using a paid theme on a second store usually means buying it again. Free themes such as Dawn don't have this issue.

3. Recreate another store's design

You can't download another store's theme. Its theme files aren't public, and its copy, photography and branding belong to that business. You can take inspiration from how a page is structured and styled, and build your own version. There are three legitimate routes:

  • Identify the theme. Many stores use a Theme Store theme. If you like the overall design, buying the same theme gives you the real thing, with support and updates. Your content and settings will still be your own.
  • Build it yourself or hire a developer. Note the sections the page uses and their order, then build them in the theme editor or as custom sections.
  • Use a reference-based builder. Page Mix takes a layout reference and a style reference and adds an original, blank, editable page to your own theme. See how it differs from cloning.

What to look at when you study a page

  • Section order: what comes after the buy box? Benefits, how-to-use, comparison, reviews, FAQ?
  • Above the fold: what does a phone visitor see before scrolling?
  • Type and spacing: how big are headings, and how much space surrounds each section?
  • Proof: where do reviews and guarantees sit relative to the add-to-cart button?

Write these down. Whichever route you choose, a clear list makes a better page than "make it look like this".
