These steps follow Shopify's documentation on templates. Menu names can change slightly as Shopify updates the admin.
Create a template in the theme editor
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, find your theme and click Edit theme.
- Open the page-type drop-down at the top of the editor (it starts on Home page), choose Products, and click Create template.
- Give it a unique name, such as
long-form, and choose which existing template it's Based on. - Click Create template, then add, remove and rearrange sections. Changes affect only products that use this template.
Behind the scenes Shopify saves a file like templates/product.long-form.json, which lists the sections and their settings.
Assign it to a product
- Go to Products and open the product.
- In the Theme template section, choose your template from the drop-down.
- Click Save.
Assign it to many products at once
- In Products, select the products and click Bulk edit.
- In the bulk editor, open Columns and add Template under General.
- Select the Template cells, choose your template, and click Save.
Template not showing in the drop-down?
- The theme isn't published. The product editor only lists templates from your published theme. Publish the theme, or preview the template in the theme editor until you're ready.
- It's a vintage theme. Creating templates in the editor needs an Online Store 2.0 theme with JSON templates.
- Wrong page type. A template created under Pages or Collections won't appear for products.
Things to remember
- Editing a template changes every product that uses it.
- App blocks (reviews, subscriptions, upsells) are added per template. Add them to the new template too.
- A store can have up to 1,000 templates. Keep names descriptive so the drop-down stays usable.
Getting a template with a new design
A new template starts as a copy of an existing one, so it looks like the rest of your store until you change it. To get a template with a genuinely new layout and style, you need new sections: from a developer, a page builder, or Page Mix's Magic Remix, which builds them from two reference pages and adds the finished template to your theme.
